Somerset County Councillor

County Councillor since 2014

I have served for Frome North on Somerset County Council since 2014.

This includes the following villages: Hassage, Farleigh Hungerford, Norton St Philip, Laverton, Rode, Lullington, Woolverton, Tellisford, Beckington, Standerwick, Rudge, Berkley, Oldford and an area in the north of Frome.

My role is to contribute to the operation of the Council and to represent the views and issues of the residents within their electoral division. I am involved in the decision making process and attend Full Council meetings, discuss policy and strategy and vote on proposals.I have been a member of the Scrutiny Committee for Policies, Children and Families Committee and on the Corporate Parent Board. I am currently a member of the HR & Policies committee and a substitute for the Regulations Committee.

The welfare of families is a big interest for me, so I am pleased to be able to support them as a corporate parent. All councillors, as members of the local authority, are a corporate parent. This means their role is to achieve good parenting for children being looked after. In broad terms the whole council is expected to do what any good parent would do. This includes promoting our children’s educational aspirations, economic prospects, ensuring their health, safety and well-being, supporting their culture and celebrating their achievements in life. (Extract from Somerset’s Corporate Parenting Strategy 2014/15.) More about the role of corporate parent is on the Somerset Council website.
